Celebrity Marriages as Short as a Sneeze
Sometimes love sweeps you off your feet and for a while you are not thinking straight, in fact, you are probably not thinking at all. Ah… we have all been there, right? You kind of know you are making a mistake but you still go for it. Sweet, isn’t it. Well, not if you make a tattoo, or get married or something, because, you know… it’s harder to forget when you break up.
Unfortunately for Angelina that’s exactly what she did back in 2000. With a “Billy Bob” tattoo on her upper left arm, she said “I do” in the Little Church of the West in Las Vegas. Needless to say, this marriage was short-lived and two years later Angelina filed for divorce.
As for the infamous Billy Bob tattoo, it got lasered off and now this place on her arm is inked with the coordinates of the exact locations each one of her 6 children entered her life.
There was another quickie wedding in the same church that took place almost a decade earlier and ended three years later. Oh, the irony. On 12 Dec 1991 Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere impulsively eloped and exchanged rings of aluminium foil which is both recklessly romantic and corny as Kansas in August. Obviously, diamonds are really a girl’s best friend. All jokes aside, this marriage was very controversial and the announcement for a divorce in December 1994 was somehow expected. And They Lived Happily Ever After
Las Vegas has witnessed true love also. The best example is the wedding of the rock great John Bon Jovi to his high-school sweetheart Dorothea Hurley in 1989 in the Graceland Wedding Chapel. Bon Jovi was then on tour but secretly snuk out leaving his band, security and manager in the dark to his intentions and flew to Sin City to marry Dorothea Hurley. The decision to get married was so impulsive they didn’t even have rings. The couple is still together, having raised 4 children. In 2001 John Bon Jovi actually decided to renew his vow in the most epic way possible. He held a concert on the parking lot of the same chapel and promised eternal love to his wife together with 75 other couples. Who knew people did that in Vegas?
A Hen Party (Almost) Gone Wrong
In 2010 Katy Perry’s hen party organized by Rihanna was overshadowed by a ridiculous arrest the previous day. When a paparazzo tried to take a picture up Katy Perry’s skirt just as they were boarding the plane to Las Vegas, her husband-to-be Russel Brand, knocked him down and was put under a citizen’s arrest by another paparazzo. Later he was charged with battery, so Perry had to fly alone.
This mishap wasn’t a reason enough to ruin her bachelorette party, which was organized by her bestie Rihanna. They started the day with 25 other girls on a pool party at Hard Rock Hotel Beach Club. Then RiRi treated Katy to a special production of Ka by Cirque du Soleil at the MGM Grand, followed by a dinner at the exclusive AGO bar and a lot of dancing at the Vanity club. Seems like it was a night to remember because Perry tweeted that she needs a liver transplant the following morning. Well done, Rihanna, well done! Despite all her efforts, thought, this marriage lasted only 14 months and according to Perry was ended with a text message by the comedian.
A Royalty Caught off Guard
Prince Harry learned the hard way that what happens in Vegas no way stays there when in August 2012 he was caught eu natural on camera in his private VIP suite in Wynn encore Tower playing strip billiards with a woman in the same attire. This absurd situation is easily explained when you take a look at the schedule of the “Party Prince” that weekend. He first attended a pool party at Wet Republic in MGM Grand, where he accidentally ran into a bachelorette party (of course he did).
Later on, at another pool party at Wynn’s XS nightclub he decided to challenge the Olympic champion Ryan Lochte to a swimming race (see, common sense). The afterparty, you already know, was taken to his suite. Many celebrities came out in support saying this was no big deal. In his tweet Richard Branson ironically comments that there’s no “shock and horror” in a picture where a single man is naked with a woman in his private room, while Lady Gaga said that he seem to be very fit and she hopes no one is mad at him because she certainly is not.
Anti-Hero of the Day
In 2017 the deadliest mass shooting in the US history happened in Las Vegas when Stephen Paddock, a high-stakes gambler, opened fire from his suite on the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay on a crowd of people going to a concert. The total number of casualties is 58 and there were many more injured. On the background of this horrific massacre, the self-proclaimed “King of Instagram” and gun lover Dan Bilzerian made a video of himself fleeing the scene in which he says a girl just got shot in the face. Since the Instagram account of the poker-playing playboy is full of photos with half-naked girls, guns or both, his running away from the carnage sparked a lot of debate as to how heroic the macho actually is. Dakota Mayer, who is a veteran and a winner of the Medal of Honour, criticised Bilzerian for running away when faced with real danger and said that children should not admire people like him. Later on, Bilzerian posted another video showing him begging a cop for a gun and running towards gunfire. He claimed that he went to get a gun and returned to the bloodbath because the cop wouldn’t give him one even after he showed his license.
You can see now that the famous Vegas slogan is no consolation when you get caught with your pants down (literally and figuratively). We don’t want to spoil the magic of this place, but the harsh truth is that this tagline is a marketing campaign dating back to 2003. Turns out the majority connected Sin City to freedom – freedom to think, feel, eat, dress and act in a way that you wouldn’t at home. Even thinking about Vegas made people feel happier and forget about their worries.
