European Association for the Study of Gambling (EASG) – Review of Its Purpose

The European Association for the Study of Gambling (EASG) is a non-for-profit organisation (NPO) which deals with various aspects related to the study of gambling. According to its Constitution, its purpose is fourfold. Firstly, it seeks to study, discuss, and disseminate knowledge about all matters related to “historical, economical, mathematical, and social aspects of gambling.” Second, it seeks to consider the “development, enforcement, and evaluation of the regulation of gambling.” Third, it looks at the marketing and management of gambling operations, and fourth, it analyses problem gambling and prevention and treatment programmes.

Organisational Structure and Background of EASG

The year in which the EASG was founded is 1993. This means that the association has around a quarter of a century’s experience in creating dialogue and exchanging information between members related to gambling and the gambling industry. In addition, the NPO is headquartered in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. This non-profit organisation gathered one of the brightest specialists, who are divided into two committees – the Executive & Scientific Committees, where each has a chairman. In both, we can find well-known names from reputable universities in Europe or even from governmental structures like, for example – Jonny Engebø, Norwegian Gaming Authority. The organisation specialises in creating and hosting conferences as well as improving knowledge on all matters regarding gambling in Europe, which includes numerous publications in several languages.

The Structure of the Website

The structure of the EASG’s website is very user-friendly and easy to navigate with eight separate tabs to take you to the right place. The first tab is titled ‘Home’ where you can see some of the latest and most recent publications and results of gambling-related conferences in Europe. The second tab, ‘General Information’ takes you to the excerpt from the EASG’s Constitution, which sets out what the website is for and what functions it fulfils. Under the third tab ‘News’, you will see several news resources which the EASG has linked to related to gambling. These resources range from Gaming Floor (an online resource for casino trade and industry news) to WannaBet? (a magazine for kids concerned about gambling). Of course, there are many other resources for you to check out. The fourth tab is called ‘Publications’ and contains several pages worth of publications and articles related to gambling. These are in English and German, as well as other European languages such as Italian. Some of the titles you will see here are ‘Gambling Regulation and Vulnerability’. The fifth tab is called ‘EASG Conferences’ and it provides a brief overview of past conferences that have taken place under the EASG umbrella. The sixth tab is called ‘Other Conferences’, which takes you to a series of other gambling-related European conferences. The seventh tab is titled ‘Links’ and we must highlight that this area is relatively sparse, with very few links being provided for except in the European category. Finally, you can contact the EASG online through its ‘Contact’ tab, which takes you directly to an online form you can submit together with your query. You can, alternatively, contact the NPO through its email address, which we provide in our concluding section below.

EASG Conferences

The 12th European Conference on Gambling Study and Policy Issues took place from 11 to 14 September at the Grand Hotel Excelsior in Valletta, Malta this year. As yet, the outcomes of the conference have not been published and we expect some of these results to be published soon. Meanwhile, the 11th European Conference on Gambling Studies and Policy Issues have been given the working title of “Development of the Invisible and Unknown: Research, Responsibilities and Regulation.” It took place in Lisbon in December 2015.

The conferences have been going on since around 2005, with the Sixth European Conference on Gambling Studies and Policy Issues, which looked at legislation and government policy related to gambling. It has subsequently been held every two years in various cities around Europe.  This conference was followed by the EASG Seminar two years later, in 2007, with a focus on the Changing Landscape of Gambling in Europe, which took into account changes in the gambling situation across various countries on the continent – addressing change and development of the gambling industry. Meanwhile, in October 2013, the EASG held another Seminar on Social Gaming and Gambling, becoming a sure authority in the field of gambling and gambling-related studies in Europe.

Other Conferences Promoted

Other conferences supported and endorsed by the EASG are the Prague Gaming Summit 3, which is scheduled to take place in March 2019 in Prague. Another conference scheduled for 2019 is the ICC/ICE VOX 2019, which is scheduled to take place in London in the UK. Then we also look at some of the past conferences during the year. These are the GambleAware’s 6th Annual Conference, which took place in London on the 5th of December in 2018. The Gaming Law & Culture Konferenz – Social Lotteries also took place in December 2018 in Germany, while the New Horizons in Responsible Gambling Conference is scheduled to also take place in March 2019 in Vancouver.
