Uncut Gems Trailer and Synopsis
A fair warning – this movie is not for the faint-hearted. Despite being one of Adam Sandler’s best roles yet, it’s probably the least enjoyable one. The paradox is fuelled with two hours of intense conversations and sustained anxiety, where Howard Ratner, a New York jeweller, and high-risk gambler, is constantly finding himself in troublesome situations. The nerve-racking soundtracks also play a vital part in the overall unpleasant experience. When watching the Uncut Gems trailer be prepared for a lot of explicit language and anxious moments that make you relive them as your own.
Howard is so deep in debt due to his gambling addiction that he’s forced to take a risky move and illegally import a unique black opal from Ethiopia. His high hopes of selling it to the NBA superstar Kevin Garnett (played by himself) for 1$ million bring all kinds of problems. While trying to catch a break from the mobsters to whom he owes over 100,000$ and being chased all over the place, Howard remains insanely optimistic. Somehow, he always manages to get his way out through vigorous speeches and wittiness.
A huge fan of basketball, Howard gets every single penny he can and bets it. The issue, however, is that he does it through an illegal bookie who is connected to a goon called Arno (played by Eric Bogosian). And just when he thought he made a big win of 600,000$ from betting on sports, it turned out that Arno got in the way and cancelled the placed bet. Of course, this could have been avoided by visiting legitimate online betting sites, but that’s a different story. Forced to take this huge blow and a bit of physical roughness, Howard remains focused and continues hustling.
With nothing left to lose, Howard proceeds with his only left option to lure Kevin Garnett into buying the precious uncut opal. It turns out that KG doesn’t really need much convincing as he falls in love with the precious gem at first glance. But a lot goes wrong in the process as Howard agrees to give Garnett the stone for a week in exchange for his Championship ring as insurance, prior sealing the deal.
In his personal life, Howard is a father of three kids and in a very complicated relationship with his wife with whom he’s in the middle of a divorce. As a result, he has another apartment where he goes to sleep every night, after putting the kids to sleep, so they could never find out he never spends the night at home. The never resting jeweller is trying to make amends with his wife after he caught his mistress (played by Julia Fox) locked up in a club’s restroom with The Weeknd (played by himself), but that never happened. Instead, she replied in cold blood:
“I think you’re the most annoying person on the planet. I hate being with you, I hate looking at you, and if I had my way, I would never see you again.”Dinah Ratner
Cast and Awards
Regardless if you’re a fan of Adam Sandler and his movies, you have to give him props for this role which is far stretched from his usual comedies. Even though the movie dropped out just in time for the Oscars, it didn’t get any nominations, despite the strong critical acclamations. This is a real shame though because in our opinion the Uncut Gems is hands down the best gambling movie of the year.
It really gets you thinking how in the world can Sandler be nominated for best actor and win some awards in the category and at the same time nominated by the Golden Raspberry Awards for ‘The Razzie Redeemer Award’. Well, movie critics have never been easy to understand, however, Adam can comfort himself with the following awards:
- 2020 AARP award for ‘Best Actor’
- 2020 Austin Film Critics Association (AFCA) award for ‘Best Actor’
- 2019 Boston Online Film Critics Association (BOFCA) award for ‘Best Actor’
- 2019 Boston Society of Film Critics (BSFC) award for ‘Best Actor’
It’s also interesting that a lot of the cast members are newcomers to Hollywood such as The Weeknd and Kevin Garnett who are superstars in their own genre but not as actors. However, in the end, it all paid off thanks to the directors Benny and Josh Safdie. The brilliant screenwriting and directing bring to the realistic feel that you get while watching the Uncut Gems movie. In an interview they gave however, the Safdie brothers said that it’s kind of a based on a real story and is inspired by their father who used to work in the Diamond District in Manhattan. Nevertheless, they’ve also won their fair share of awards:
- 2020 Film Independent Spirit award for ‘Best Director’
- 2019 Florida Film Critics Circle (FFCC) award for ‘Best Original Screenplay’
- 2019 GWNYFCA award for ‘Best Editing’
- 2019 National Board of Review (NBR) award for ‘Best Original Screenplay’
