England and Wales may be two of the safest countries in the world, but their levels of criminal activity are far higher than they were 60 years ago. The criminalisation of drugs in the 1960s led to a spark in crime, as did the increase in individual wealth and prosperity. Crime rates began to decline in 1995 and figures have been stabilising since 2005. While social researchers have reached no overall consensus on why this is, a combination of policy changes, including interventions targeting young people at risk of offending, and the implementation of planning measures, such as street lighting, surveillance schemes, and property marking, are likely factors.
So, what’s the picture like today? This study analyses 15 forms of victim-based crime in 41 regions across England and Wales to uncover the safest and most dangerous places to live. These forms of crime include, among others, sexual offences, burglaries, violent crime, theft, unlawful driving, and homicide. The study ranks the regions according to their total number of criminal cases and identifies the forms most prevalent in each place. London ranks first as the region with the most crime, with 21% of all cases across England and Wales. In contrast, Dyfed-Powys in Wales ranks last as the safest region. The results reveal that certain forms of crime, such as shoplifting and harassment, are endemic across England and Wales and desperately need legislative review. Other forms, such as theft, are mostly rampant in regions with large cities, like London and the West Midlands. Generally speaking, when hearing the word odds, most people associate it with either casino gaming or with online gambling. The truth is that the most important calculations of odds have nothing to do with such pleasant activities and are most of the times related to quite tragical events.

The first one shows what are the rates of homicides and different types of injuries. Obviously, London, as a capital leads the chart with higher percentages than other smaller locations. Dyfed-Powys, Gloucestershire, Dorset and Wiltshire are among the ones that show the lowest numbers when it comes to these specific crimes.
The next table represents the rates of robberies, residential burglaries and sexual offences. The safest place for people from the UK when it comes to sexual crimes apparently is Gloucestershire. Durham, Dyfed-Powys and Cumbria are the towns in which is less likely you to be a victim of a theft. London again leads in all the different sections with highest UK crime rates.
The third and last chart that we would like to show you, represents the crime rates in the UK for non-residential burglary, shoplifting, vehicle offence and others. Cumbria, North Wales and Dyfed-Powys are the safest towns on the island, while, unsurprisingly, London keeps on leading with the highest numbers.
Methodology
This study analysed victim-based crime statistics in England and Wales between the period of January 2019 to September 2019, taken from the ONS. The final percentages were calculated by identifying the number of crimes in each region and dividing this figure by the total victim-based crime rate in England and Wales. Only regions with sufficient data available were included in the study.
