The Big Short Trailer – Plot Summary

It’s scary to think back to what happened in 2008 when the real estate market went bust and millions of people were jobless and homeless as a result. In times of uncertainty for the global economics due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the interest in movies such as The Big Short is rising as they feel very appropriate to the current situation. In the following paragraphs, we’ll provide you with The Big Short trailer as well as a detailed analysis of the storyline.

The prologue of the movie takes us back to 2005 when Dr Michael Burry (played by Christian Bale), who is an extravagant hedge fund manager of Scion Capital, notices something strange. His research led him to believe that the entire US real estate market is a giant bubble about to burst. So, he became the first person to bet against the housing market in the history of America and we could only imagine what the outcome would be if any of the top sites for online gambling in the US accepted such types of bets. Well, he saw similar patterns which led to the 1930s Great Depression and was certain that it was bound to happen again. But no one listened.

At the time there was no way to trade bonds against the US house market. So, Michael went directly to the banks to negotiate credit default swaps on mortgage bonds and everyone thought that he was insane. Yet they happily let him short the bonds for a total of 1.3$ billion because after all the banks were absolutely sure that the housing market could never crash. Well, as it turned out, Dr Burry played on the greediness and stupidity of the banks costing them more than 2$ billion.

Simultaneously, the storyline follows two more personages, who likewise were going against the mainstream belief. The first one, played by Ryan Gosling, is called Jared Vennett and is based on the real Deutsche Bank trading executive Greg Lippmann. In The Big Short movie, Vennett stumbles upon Burry’s analysis of a banker’s party. After carefully crunching the numbers he’s sold to the idea that indeed the market will inevitably collapse and enters.

Vennett and Mark Baum, who was a hedge fund manager at FrontPoint Partners, crossed paths after a misplaced call to Baum’s company. What we know for Mark is that he’s also a fictional character based on the real investor Steve Eisman. The role is brilliantly portraited by Steve Carell which secured him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture.

The Big Short Awards – The Strong Cast Choice Paid Off

Portrayed by amazing writing and performance of a star cast, it’s no surprise that The Big Short was nominated for several major awards and picked up a few of them. The director Adam McKay in a combination with the writer Charles Randolph created a fascinating film that glues the audience to the screen. McKay is notorious for his satirical style and has once again created a masterpiece that falls into a few different genres – biography, comedy, drama, and history. Here’s the list of The Big Short awards:

  • 2016 Oscar for ‘Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay’
  • 2016 BAFTA award for ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’
  • 2016 Critics Choice Award for ‘Best Actor in a Comedy’ to Christian Bale
  • 2016 Satellite Award for ‘Best Actor in a Comedy’ to Christian Bale

The unusual screenplay was inspired by the book The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine written by Michael Lewis. And what better way to portray a catastrophic story of corruption, greed, and incompetence if not to cast some of the biggest names in Hollywood. As we already mentioned the star roster includes the likes of Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Bratt Pitt, and Ryan Gosling. However, there are other star appearances, so you better go and watch The Big Short Movie on Netflix right away.

The Big Short Online Response

The Big Short online acclamations are more than sound with high ratings amid reputable review-aggregation websites. As of the time of writing, the box office gross is more than 130$ million with budget spend of nearly 5 times less. While not the definition of a blockbuster budget-wise, The Big Short Rotten Tomatoes audience rating is also close to 90%.

The Big Short – Netflix Popularity Increased

Despite being released in 2015, The Big Short is a brilliant movie and one of the most popular Netflix gambling movies. Right now, we can strongly relate to the 2008 global economy free fall as we’re forced to stay home and watch it all happen again. But in times like this, we can take our minds off the usual daily routines and do things we have never seemed to have the time for.
